Where is or how do I find or locate my Microsoft Money file

Searching for the Microsoft Money (.MNY) file The Microsoft Money or .MNY file usually lives in your 'My Documents' directory, but could live elsewhere on your system.

The easiest way to find it is to do a search on your computers hard drives for '*.mny' - you can do this by either pressing Start->Search or by pressing the 'Search' option in Windows Explorer.

You may see a window like the one displayed to the right. You should type in '*.mny" in the search for files box, and leave the search within the files option blank. You can choose to search all of your hard drives (recommended).

There are a couple of advanced options that you might also wish to check - these are
  • Uncheck the 'Hide extensions for known file types' box
  • Check the 'Show hidden files and folders' box
After filling in the search, press the Search button and your computer will start looking for the files.

When you search the hard drive, you'll normally see one or two Microsoft Money files listed in the results window on the right. One should be your data file. If you see one named 'sample.mny', then this is the sample file which comes with many installations of the program.
