Onspeed interferes with Microsoft Money Online Update

If you use OnSpeed (a product designed to speed up web access by compressing data for download) with some versions of Microsoft Money, running an online update can cause an error (see below) when you next try and open the Money file. One of the things that Onspeed does is to compress images for download, and it appears it that Onspeed is compressing an image in MS Money's online update. This is causing the subsequent error as the image file is written to the disk and reused.

'Microsoft Money has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconveience.'
AppName: msmoney.exe AppVer: 12.0.0.613 ModName: mspfctl0.dll
ModVer: 12.0.0.613 Offset: 00018412

In Microsoft Money 2004 - It is not clear at this stage whether Onspeed causes problems for other versions, perform the following steps:
  1. Open the folder "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Money\12.0\Webcache"
  2. Delete or rename the file stories1.gif - this will be one of the most recently dated files.
  3. Turn of Onspeed
  4. Open Microsoft Money - the recent news picture will be missing but this should be the only effect
To stop this happening repeatedly, you'll either have to remove Onspeed or, if you don't wish to do this, then turn off Onspeed for the duration of Microsoft Money online updates.

This problem has rarely occurred since 2005, as there have been few updates to the Money products, and so, in general, the product is safe to use again.
